South Africa Today

Blackwoods Magazine,   January 1977

Excerpt:

Amid the gloom and the intransigent line of the Government, there is a ray of hope, although it seems there will be more ashes before the phoenix can arise. Previously apartheid was considered as an end in itself, now it is regarded more as a means to an end. The psychological barrier between Black and White is gradually being eroded. An optimist might say that the Afrikaner knows the black man not as a colonial knows a native but as an inhabitant of the same land. Moreover, now that the Afrikaner is involved in enterprises other than agriculture, he has encountered other ways of thinking and his horizons have been broadened. Tactless intrusion can only retard this growing relaxation. Intelligent and sympathetic pressure may help to change the situation. After all, in the words of an Afrikaner, South Africa does not want to be considered the polecat of the world forever.
